The computer boxes have been torn open and classrooms continue to be wired around the state. Now comes the tough part: teaching the technology skills that will be relevant for children in their studies and their lives. The Pacific Bell/UCLA Initiative for 21st Century Literacies, the outcome of a $1 million gift from Pac Bell to UCLA's Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, will evaluate the meaning of literacy in an age characterized by rapidly changing technologies and a wealth of unfiltered information. The initiative will focus on educating the end-user of information, improving the information system and addressing policy issues. As part of the initiative, UCLA will host a summit on 21st century literacies on Oct. 21.
